Steven Pinker: The History of Violence
Professor Steven Pinker: “The Better Angels of our Nature” The History and Psychology of Violence
Professor Steven Pinker lectures on the history of violence, beginning with the contrasting opinions of Hobbes and Rousseau in the 17th and 18th centuries. He then goes on to compare violence and trauma through history to modern-day examples of homicide and other violent crimes, the influence of literacy and enlightenment, the nature of war and genocide and the new era of peace. Finally, Professor Pinker briefly covers the psychology of humans through history and their inclinations to peace or violence, as well as how violence can be considered a social dilemma.
