“What Really Makes a Law?” An Introduction to Legal Philosophy

Law Taster Lecture

This event has now ended

Speaker: Dr Balgiisa Ahmed, Lecturer in Law
Date: Friday 19 February 2021, 4:30-5:30pm

Everyone is supposed to follow the law, but Martin Luther King Jr once said (quoting St Thomas Aquinas): “An unjust law is no law at all”.

So, what exactly makes a law different from a rule? Or a helpful suggestion? What gives Police Commissioner Gordon his authority but turns Batman into someone who operates outside the law?

The answers to some of these questions can be found in the study of Jurisprudence: the theory or philosophy of law and the words of different legal philosophers. In this lecture, you will be introduced to different schools of thought and quickly see not everyone agrees on the suddenly not-so-simple question: “What really makes a Law?”

This taster will also include an introductory overview of studying at NCH, and there will be ample time for Q&A with Faculty and Student Ambassadors.
