Consciousness

How are the physical events occurring within our brains linked to the experiences we enjoy from moment to moment? This is the problem of consciousness. In this talk I will review our current understanding of the neural underpinnings of the states and contents of consciousness, with some asides on their disorders. Following a brief review of the ‘grand theories’ of consciousness currently on offer, including the global workspace and integrated information models, I will return to the question of whether the stunning neuroscientific advances of the past century have solved the problem of consciousness. I will give a guarded answer.
