Libraries at NCH

Students at New College of the Humanities are richly provided with library facilities, including the Registry Collection, Senate House Library (SHL), and the British Library.

All subject rooms in the College itself house a collection of key texts related to the discipline and degree taught there, for reference during tutorials and private study. There are also collections of books of more general interest located in common spaces around the building available exclusively to New College of the Humanities students and staff.

Senate House Library

Just three minutes’ walk from The Registry, Senate House Library (SHL) is the main academic library used by New College of the Humanities students.

Commissioned in 1931, Senate House Library is the federal library of the University of London, which was founded by Royal Charter in 1836. As the federal library, it supports the nineteen colleges and academic institutions in the University and the wider research community.

It is one of the top research libraries in the UK, particularly focused on the arts and humanities, and home to more than three million items. New College of the Humanities students have full access to its borrowing, digital and print services.

The NCH Collection at SHL

The New College of the Humanities Collection has its home in one of the most spacious and beautiful reading rooms within Senate House Library.

The Collection contains classic texts and contemporary commentaries which have been chosen by the College’s academic staff for their direct relevance to the degree syllabuses taught at New College of the Humanities.

The British Library

New College of the Humanities students are eligible for a reader’s card to use the British Library – one of the greatest research libraries in the world. As it is a copyright library, it has copies of all new books published in the UK, and many of those published abroad, making it an excellent resource when more detailed research is required.
