Libraries at NCH
Students at New College of the Humanities are richly provided with library facilities, including the Registry Collection, Senate House Library (SHL), and the British Library.
All subject rooms in the College itself house a collection of key texts related to the discipline and degree taught there, for reference during tutorials and private study. There are also collections of books of more general interest located in common spaces around the building available exclusively to New College of the Humanities students and staff.
Northeastern University Library
New College of Humanities students have full access to the digital resources available from Northeastern University’s Library. Located in Boston, Northeastern University leads the way in redefining library service in the 21st century. Resources include over 800,000 e-books and over 100,000 electronic journals. The Northeastern University Library provides the resources and services which enable students to ignite interests, spark creativity, and forge new discoveries.
City of London Libraries
From September 2021 students at the university are eligible for membership to the lending libraries of the City of London. This one membership covers access to Barbican Library, Shoe Lane Library and Artizan Street Library and Community Centre. Students will be able to use all the facilities at each library including access to their working space and printing facilities.
The City of London also has three research libraries, students will be able to use Guildhall Library as well as the London Metropolitan Archives for free, however students who wish to use the City Business Library will have to opt in.
Senate House Library
Just three minutes’ walk from The Registry, Senate House Library (SHL) is the main academic library used by New College of the Humanities students.
Commissioned in 1931, Senate House Library is the federal library of the University of London, which was founded by Royal Charter in 1836. As the federal library, it supports the nineteen colleges and academic institutions in the University and the wider research community.
It is one of the top research libraries in the UK, particularly focused on the arts and humanities, and home to more than three million items. New College of the Humanities students have full access to its borrowing, digital and print services.
The NCH Collection at SHL
The New College of the Humanities Collection has its home in one of the most spacious and beautiful reading rooms within Senate House Library.
The Collection contains classic texts and contemporary commentaries which have been chosen by the College’s academic staff for their direct relevance to the degree syllabuses taught at New College of the Humanities.
The British Library
New College of the Humanities students are eligible for a reader’s card to use the British Library – one of the greatest research libraries in the world. As it is a copyright library, it has copies of all new books published in the UK, and many of those published abroad, making it an excellent resource when more detailed research is required.
