Literature 1900 – the Present

30 Credits

The Moderns

This course aims to give knowledge of a range of texts from twentieth century Britain and Ireland, an understanding of their social and cultural contexts, and the interpretative skills necessary to give sophisticated descriptions of them.

The course is positioned in the second year, immediately after the Literature 1550-1700 course, in order that students may have developed considerably in their critical sophistication since reading texts of this period before coming to university.

Unlike in Literature 1700-1830 and Literature 1830-1900, there is no requirement to write on all three genres (prose, poetry, and drama) in the examination; students are trusted to have developed their own interests by this stage. Nonetheless, lectures will cover all three genres.
