Introduction to the History of European Art

30 Credits

This introductory course provides a broad overview of the history of European art.

Students will be introduced to major themes and issues that have shaped artistic production, from antiquity to the present day, and question the way in which this material has traditionally been presented.

Students will develop an awareness of how European art history emerged as a discipline defined by stylistic categorisation, historical periodization and ideas of greatness. The notion that certain works can be considered representative will be considered critically, as we explore how works of art can actually illustrate a more culturally diverse and intertwined history than is usually acknowledged.

Site visits will complement the lectures, and will also be used to consider the role of institutions in establishing hierarchies of visual and material culture.
