Operations at NCH
The Operations department ensures the smooth-running of New College of the Humanities. We are in charge of financial management and corporate relationships, the upkeep of The Registry building, Human Resources, and IT facilities.
Rob Farquharson BA (Oxon), MBA (Wharton)
Chief Executive Officer
Rob’s early career was as a solicitor with Clifford Chance in London and Singapore. He spent four years in corporate finance with 3i and three years with Bain & Company as a consultant. More recently, he has spent eight years as a director and managing director of major educational publishing businesses. He has a degree in history from Oxford University and an MBA from the Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania.
Vanessa Carreras BSc (Leeds), ACMA
Director of Finance
Vanessa specialises in finance related functions and is a qualified Management Accountant. For the last 10 years, she has held various Financial Controller positions. The industries she has worked at have varied from Lift Installation, to mobile technology, print distribution, but most notably Further and Higher Education.
Gabriella is an experienced financial accountant, currently studying towards her final ACCA exams. She has worked in Accountancy Practice for seven years providing accountancy services for a wide range of businesses before joining the Higher Education Industry.
Sheena Van der Merwe
HR & Operations Manager
Sima has many years of Human Resources experience and has worked within a number of different industries. For the last 10 years Sima has worked within Children’s Publishing and prior to that she has worked in Logistics, IT and Retail.
Sima is MCIPD qualified and has an MA in Human Resource Management.
Data & Payroll Analyst (Herts)
Lee manages the timetabling needs of the College. He is the main contact for any timetabling queries you have. He can also assist with any ad-hoc room bookings students or staff have for study or event purposes. Lee achieved a First Class Honours studying BSc Music Technology at the University of Hertfordshire in 2011.
Selina supports the Timetabling Manager fulfilling the College’s timetabling needs. Prior to NCH, Selina worked in Corporate Access for top and mid-tier investment banks, scheduling investor and company management meetings and organising conferences and events. She has a BA Hons from Warwick University.
Tom is the primary contact for all Facilities / IT matters across the college, he started in facilities working for an investment bank and went on to further his experience in similar roles for a governing body, a talent agency and now at the College. Tom is now working towards gaining his NEBOSH qualification and looking to begin an IWFM membership.
Dahlia assists the HR team with staff recruitment processes, onboarding, and daily administrative tasks. She graduated with her BA Communications and Journalism in 2017.
Alex is the onsite IT support engineer, managing all requests and incidents for the college IT equipment and network related issues. He works with two teams, one from London and one from Boston, and always tries to provide a friendly and high level of service.
Born and raised in Romania, he has a background in the military and police but has always been tech savvy and into technology, thus he started his IT journey as an apprentice in London working with primary and secondary schools as an IT Technician.
Canvas VLE and Learning Resources Manager
Jed is a Londoner and has been a digital skills specialist for 10 years. In that time, he has trained and supported thousands of adults in colleges, community centres and in municipal libraries. He is a member of the Association for Learning Technology, the Learning Network, and the British Educational Research Association, specialising in research on digital operations in tertiary and adult education. All of his nationwide reviews of digital operations are published on College Websites. He is also an active participant in consultations and forums organised by the All Party Parliamentary Group on Digital Skills, the World Federation of Colleges & Polytechnics, and the Centre for Digital Education, Culture & Society.
Prior to attending Birkbeck to study community development and public policy, Jed worked as a live television director and transmission controller.
Lydia supports the Student Life team, acting as the central point for coordinating university events. Prior to NCH, Lydia worked in student recruitment at various specialist universities across London. She graduated with her BA (Hons) in Music from the University of Nottingham in 2019.
Samina is assisting the HR team with HR initiatives, overseeing recruitment and providing HR support. Samina has a CIPD Level 5 and holds a PGCE.
