Get Festive in London

NCH Student Blog | November 22, 2019

There is nothing that signifies the approaching Christmas time more than the glow of seasonal streetlights! This month the streets of London are starting to get festive; whether you just love Christmas time or you’re willing to go to have an excuse to sip mulled wine with a friend (or a crush!) there is no better way to spend one of your Autumn/Winter evenings!

First, check out the Carnaby Christmas lights from 7 November. Let’s be honest, what is a better way to start the festive seasons than on one of the most famous, shopping streets of London? This year the organisers promise the ‘never seen before’ Christmas installations and over 20 perfect off sales in shops and restaurants!

If you just want to stroll around the streets of Theatreland, see over 115,000 lights illuminate from 12 November – that is when Covent Garden transforms into a real winter wonderland with one of the biggest Christmas trees in the city!

Winter Wonderland offers an endless array of Christmas activities and entertainment. Do you want to go ice-skating around the UK’s largest open-air ice rink, experience winter adventure in the Magical Ice Kingdom and see breathtaking views across London in the Giant Observation Wheel; or maybe you just want to attend the Christmas Markets, sip mulled wine and try all of the delicious foods? Nevertheless, the entry is free and is open until January!

From 23 November, the King’s Road and Sloane Square will become lit for the Christmas time. If you are looking for festive entertainment, carol singers, or you want to see the Santa Claus himself – this one is for you! The decorations will be inspired by the crown of King Charles II, for whom the King’s Road was originally built.

Finally, have a long walk along the riverside to see the colourful Christmas lights being lit in the South Bank! Then remember to head in the direction of the London Bridge to watch the 30 minutes lights show. The Shard Lights will return on the 2nd December, you will be able to see the 20 storeys of The Shard turn into colourful spectacle. This year the display is designed by local schoolchildren!

So, there you have it! The best spots to get into the festive spirit in London this Christmas!
