Being eco-friendly can be pretty challenging… That’s what we often hear, isn’t it? There are a lot of misconceptions, which make an eco-friendly lifestyle seem superficial, inconvenient and expensive, when in fact it’s very simple and in many cases, you can actually save money. Save the planet (and save some money) – doesn’t it sound appealing?

Here are a few simple ways on how to become eco-friendly!

Invest in your own cup. If you’re going to your local cafe, or you’re buying a coffee in Pret, instead of taking a plastic cup, bring your own one! You’re not only going to help reduce the plastic use, but you’re also going to save money! Many coffee shops offer a discount for those who come with their own cup (You save 50p in Pret!). There are many different brands, but I personally recommend the keep cup, they have different colour and size option, so everyone can find something that suits their personal style (12oz Medium size £11).

Bring your own water bottle. If you’re thinking of reducing your plastic-use, this is one of the easiest and most effective ways to do so. Instead of buying single-use plastic water bottles, bring your own one! There are many cafes and shops where you can refill your water bottle for free (i.e. Planet Organic). I’ve also heard about the initiative called Refill London, which aims to make drinking water more accessible in public spaces. You can refill your bottle with free tap water in different areas of London and you can use the Refill app to locate the spot.

Use Karma app. This is another initiative that aims to reduce food waste. Every day you can find delicious unsold food from restaurants, cafees and grocery stores to enjoy at half the regular price. The app offers countless options, you can always find something you are craving!

Bring your own lunch box. Whenever you can, try to bring your own lunch box. I know it’s not always easy to prepare your lunch at home, especially during the exam season. Just take your lunch box and whenever you grab food on the go, ask the staff to pack the food in your own lunch box! That way you can reduce the use of plastic containers – it’s that simple! (Some places offer an extra discount for those who bring their own lunch box).

Those are the four, most simple ways in which you can become eco-friendly and save some money!
